Michele and Howard Hall, the finest underwater film makers in the world, are planning 2 back-to-back 9-day trips to the Maldives on the live-aboard M/V Manthiri in January 2010. It would be great to have a tour with them on board.
One reason they are interested in these trip dates is because January offers the chance for high visibility and numerous mantas on cleaning stations – perhaps up to 12 to 20 at the same time. Last January, a group from Boulder, Colorado saw 9 whale sharks in one day and had over 20 mantas on a cleaning station dive! "Of course, we won't see this because that would be expecting too much. But we might see an Anthias! (You’ll recognize that as a bit of Howard's humor.)" But just in case, Howard will be bringing his new RED camera in the Gates Deep RED housing in hopes of capturing some 4K
stock footage.
For those booking on the first trip, an added bonus is that the path of an annular solar eclipse is expected to go directly over the Maldives on January 15th Here’s the link to a website with an interactive map and info regarding the eclipse. Zoom in and then click anywhere to get eclipse data:

They will be diving aboard the luxury live-aboard, M/Y Manthiri, which they know is one of the best live-aboards in the Maldives. The Manthiri, with its crew of 12, takes only 12 passengers - which is a big plus in their opinion. It’s a relatively small vessel (85 feet) that utilizes a separate dive support vessel (the Vasantha) for diving operations. The 54-foot Vasantha features a 400-square foot dive deck, complete with head and two hot water showers, and it rides low on the water for a convenient and stable platform to dive from.

Howard and Michele haven't booked their flights yet, but it’s their intention to fly from California to Bangkok, then on to Malé. Flying through Dubai is another possibility. |
